Toshiba has just reported that volume shipments of their largest Solid State Drive so far, with a capacity of 512 GB, have started. The drive has been available in some of their laptop models for a couple of months, but apparently their production volume has now reached a level where they’re able to sell a larger number of these. The drives were originally announced in 2008, and it looks like Toshiba’s release schedule has suffered some delays; last year, they said that mass production would start in the second quarter.
Toshiba claims sequential read speeds of op to 230 MB/s, with writes clocking in at a respectable 180 MB/s. The drives are shipping with a 3 Gbps SATA-interface, which means they’re getting close to their theoretical limits; the maximum speed of a 3 Gbps interface is about 300 MB/s. There’s no word on random read and writes; and to make matters confusing they included a screenshot from H2Bench that shows speeds that are very different from what they claim in their press release:
In addition to the 512 GB parts, there are also models with capacities of 64, 128 and 256 GB using the same MLC NAND-flash units produced at Toshiba’s “award-winning 43nm process”. The 512 GB version is only available as a 2.5 inch drive; all others are also available in other packages.
