Just days after Hitachi announced their 2 TB, 7200 rpm drive started shipping The Register reports hearing rumors about a similar drive from Western Digital. WD has been shipping a 2 TB drive for several months, but this is a 5400 rpm “green” version; the new model is running at a more performance-oriented 7200 rpm:
It is listed as a 2TB and 3.5-inch drive, spinning at 7200rpm, with a 32MB cache, 8.7msecs access time, and 5-year warranty.
The five year warranty suggests this is an enterprise-oriented model; I’m guessing this will show up in nearline storage appliances from all major vendors within just a couple of months of the official release.
An interesting detail is that this is listed as a 4-platter model, which means the drive is using 500 GB platters. The Hitachi drive released last week has five 400 GB platters, meaning their drive most likely has a higher power consumption, and will be more expensive to produce.
