Xiotech offering trade-in program for old harddisks

We’ve all been waiting for weeks for the exciting new product Xiotech was going to announce; it turns out there isn’t one (so far). What they did announce today is a “cash for disk clunkers” program, that will give you a discount of up to $1.000 per terabyte of disk space bought from them.

The offer valid for the Emprise 7000 and 5000 models, and their VM Storage Solution. The offer is valid until the end of September; so if you’re thinking about using Xiotech’s ISE-based storage systems, now is the time to order some 1TB SATA disks on the cheap so you can trade them in. Xiotech was kind enough to provide a short summary of the systems that are eligible for the discount:

  • Emprise 7000: Supports up to 64 ISE (1,024 terabytes) and is managed by dual controllers. It includes Web Services-based storage management via ICON Manager, a distributed cluster architecture, Intelligent Provisioning and a suite of data replication solutions.
  • Emprise 7000 Edge: Supports up to 10 ISE (160 terabytes) and can be easily upgraded as needs evolve to the Emprise 7000 system. It also includes Web Services-based management via ICON Manager, Intelligent Provisioning and a suite of data replication solutions.
  • Emprise 5000: A self-enclosed, virtual storage system that can be attached to servers either directly or via a switch. Four storage tiers are available, with a maximum capacity of 16 terabytes. Performance scales linearly, so that two systems roughly double the performance of one.
  • VM Storage Solution: Supports up to 64 ISE (1,024 terabytes), is managed by dual controllers, and offers high-speed integration and automation with virtual machine environments. The customized virtual storage solution provides management of storage for virtual machines in one pane of glass, and automates virtual machine tasks with intuitive wizards.

Their ISE technology is widely recognized; instead of building their storage units of individual disks, you buy disk packs including smart controllers, battery backup and more, pre-packaged in 8 TB units. A new generation of ISE units is expected to be released soon, including faster SSD’s or other improvements. I guess the new release will be announced near the end of September, once Xiotech has cleared their inventory of old units using this trade-in program.
