EMC daughter Iomega has just released a new NAS appliance that has support for both NAS and SAN technologies; it allows a multitude of connection options including iSCSI, SMB, NFS and AFP.
It offers the traditional “SMB/Home office” features such as a printserver, mediaserver, Time Machine backups etc; but in addition to that it also has more advanced features like block-level replication to a second offsite unit, and it is VMware certified for use with both NFS and iSCSI.
The new appliance has a starting price of $700 (2TB), and is available with capacities of up to 8TB, as can be expected from a four-drive unit, giving it a usable capacity of around 6TB when using RAID-5. The 8TB model has a suggested retail price of $1900.
In other news, EMC is offering a free StorCenter IX2 and 2-year Mozy backup subscription to top students through their EMC Academic Alliance:
Jack Mollen, EMC’s Executive Vice President of Human Resources, said, “We’re honored to salute these dedicated students who represent the future of information technology innovation. These top students and their peers have the potential to produce knowledge that will be vital to the advancement of information storage and management. In celebration of EMC’s 30th anniversary, EMC Information Honors serves as a natural extension of EMC’s mission of helping people bring the power of their information to life.”
