EMC cofounder Richard Egan dies at the age of 73

One of EMC’s two founders, Richard Egan, died last night at the age of 73. In an e-mailed statement, his family said that Mr. Egan was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in May. Egan founded EMC thirty years ago this week, retiring as Chairman Emeritus in 2001.

EMC’s CEO and chairman Joseph Tucci said:

“On behalf of more than 40,000 EMC employees from around the world, we extend our deepest condolences to Mrs. Egan and the entire family”.

In a blog post, Chuck Hollis has this to say about the way Egan will be remembered at EMC:

Way back when, Dick Egan *was* EMC.  The company and the man were largely inseparable.  To say he was a man with a vision would be a serious understatement of his contagious enthusiasm. The stories of his unique, compelling (and sometimes outrageous) style still circulate around the halls of the company.
