USB/FireWire-powered SSD drives

OWC just announced a new drive option for their Mercury On-The-Go Pro drives: a Solid State Disk. The drives are available in sizes of 64, 128 and 256 GB. All models offer FireWire 400, Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 connections, and are powered via the USB/FireWire bus; that means you’ll only need to carry the drive itself with you, without needing a separate power brick.

In addition to that, the SSD should make it more resilient to the kind of accidental damage external drives normally suffer from, such as dropping it. A light, fast and robust drive is something that might find a niche among businessmen and journalists that travel a lot and need flexible, fast storage. Prices are not that extreme either:

  • 64 GB: $279.99
  • 128 GB: $449.99
  • 256 GB: $729.99

On the other hand, for these prices you can also get a USB flash drive that’s even smaller; the 256 GB model announced by Kingston a couple of months ago hasn’t hit the streets yet, but a 128 GB DataTraveler 200 currently has a street price of around $400.
