At the 70th Autumn Meeting of the Japan Society of Applied Physics, Sharp has announced that they have developed a new blue-violet (405nm) later that can produce 500mW of power. The current generation of blue-violet lasers produced by Sharp has 320mW of power; the new laser is strong enough to write the third and fourth layer of a Blu-ray disc.
More details about the laser can be found via Tech-On; but the most important thing to note is that the laser can be used to write three- and four-layer Blu-ray discs, enabling capacities to be increased to 75 or 100GB. TDK has first demonstrated the physical media required three years ago; so on the technical side everything seems ready for a quick introduction.
The only obstacle that Sharp will have to overcome is red tape; there are no official specifications for 75 and 100GB Blu-ray discs yet. This might explain why Sharp hasn’t announced when they will start producing these lasers in mass quantities yet; but this announcement will put more pressure on the Blu-ray consortium to complete the required specs soon.
