Marvell has been showing several upcoming products at the Intel Developer Forum, and one of them is the latest revision of their 6 Gbps SATA controller. The original version of this chip was already supposed to be in use by motherboard manufacturers, but a bug in their PATA controller caused some delays. The new revision of the 88SE9123 controller should be making its way to motherboard makers soon.
They also had a solid state disk with 6 Gbps interface on display, which was achieving a burst speed of 359 MB/s in IOmeter benchmarks, a figure that wouldn’t be possible with todays 3 Gbps SATA interfaces. The sustained average read speed was just south of 300 MB/s, demonstrating the need for the new interface.
“The SATA interface transition to 6Gb/s is critical to meet the demands of ever-higher performance desktop computers, workstations and servers,” said Mark Geenen, Founder and President of Trend Focus. “Marvell’s 6Gb/s SATA RAID controller will enable the next generation of high performance, and yet, cost effective computing platforms. The combination of speed and value provided by Marvell is well timed to meet the renewed growth of performance storage as global economic recovery gains momentum in 2010.”
