IBM adds new storage system to DS8000 series

IBM has announced their first new high-end storage system in years. The DS8700 adds increased capacity and better performance-per-watt. In IBM’s words:

The DS8700 includes new dual IBM POWER6-based controllers, a new internal fabric interconnect, and upgraded device adapters that deliver a performance improvement of up to over 150%, compared to the most powerful previous model.  This enhances the DS8700′s ability to support the most demanding business applications and business analytics requirements.

The system offers the expected features, including automatic migration of “hot” data to faster storage, and the ability to create several storage tiers by including SSD, Fibre Channel and SATA drives. Fully maxed out, the DS8700 supports up to 1024 1TB SATA drives, bringing the maximum capacity to a petabyte. This storage can be accessed using up to 128 4 Gbps Fibre Channel ports. For faster storage, 15.000rpm drives up to 450GB and SSDs up to 146GB are available.
