Plextor enters SSD market

Plextor, widely known for their CD-ROM and DVD drives, has announced they are entering the SSD business. According to the announcement made at the CES, the first drives will be 64 and 128GB units based on a Marvell chipset.

The 64GB model just appeared on their website; it’s based on MLC flash memory, but promises to offer “SLC performance” and a unique wear-leveling algorithm that’s supposed to prevent a degradation of performance over time. To me, it sounds like they should have released this drive last year; wear-leveling algorithms are far from unique, and the performance figures don’t sound extreme either (4200 IOPS for 4K reads and 1200 IOPS for 4K writes).

But then again, Plextor is a well-known brand, and I’m sure there will be more exciting SSD products from them in the near future. They already suggested this at the CES:

“Plextor has a lot of new items in the works, and we’re excited to announce our first line of SSDs to meet consumers’ demand for low power consumption, enhanced performance and reliability,”
