New memory cards: capacity, wireless transfers

There has been a lot of news about memory cards for digital cameras, media players and mobile phones lately. Two notable announcements managed to escape my attention earlier this month; a huge 128GB compact flash card, and a new card from Sony that supports wireless data transfers.

The CF card is made by Silicon Power, and supports speeds of op to 400x (90 MB/s). The speed is pretty standard for newer CF cards, but the capacity is not. This will mostly benefit professional photographers that capture lots of raw footage, and are getting more and more video options on their cameras as well. It comes with ECC error correction and wear leveling technology; Silicon Power also provides a lifetime warranty. Pricing for the new cards has not been announced yet.

The other new development is the release first TransferJet card by Sony. TransferJet is a technology to enable wireless data transfers over very short distances (centimeters); it’s backed by a consortium that includes companies such as Canon, Nikon, Toshiba and Sony Ericsson. The card that’s scheduled to appear early next month is an 8GB Memory Stick with TransferJet included, and will retail for around $99. They are also releasing a Sony VAIO F-laptop and the digital camcorders TX7 en HX5V, which include the TranferJet technology as well.

Current data rates are said to be around 40 Mbits/second; the maximum theoretical speed achievable with the standard is 375 Mbps.
