Gartner just released their quarterly report on the storage market, and the figures look good. Year-on-year growth for external storage was 18.3 percent, more than making up for last year’s decline. When compared to Q1 2008, growth is 5.2 percent.
The figures also show that EMC and NetApp are gaining the most in terms of market share, and a trend towards more modular systems. The latter should come as no surprise; in the current economic climate, customers will think twice about investing in a large monolithic system. Pay-as-you-grow modular approaches that are cheaper in the short term are likely to be favored for the next year or so.
