Dell just announced some new members for their EqualLogic iSCSI SAN family. The PS6000XVS and PS6010XVS arrays offer both SSD and SAS storage options combined into the same chassis; customers can combine 8 SAS and 8 SSD drives. These new arrays appear to be targeted towards smaller customers; Dell already offered SSD-only models.
The main difference between the two models are the connectivity options; the 6000 series offers four gigabit interfaces per controller, while the 6010 series has dual 10 Gbps interfaces. Other than that, the arrays are largely similar:
- Eight 100 GB SSDs
- Eight 450 GB 15.000 rpm SAS drives
- 4.4 TB of total storage space when not using RAID
Pricing for the new arrays has not been announced yet, but these XVS models will probably fit in right between the 6000S/6010S models using 16 SSDs and the 6000XV/6010XV that offer 16 15.000 rpm SAS drives.
According to Dell, these new arrays will do automatic storage tiering “within the new arrays”. Knowing Dell’s history with these products, that probably means within the XVS enclosure only. They also added tighter VMWare integration in the latest firmware; copy and snapshot operations will cause far less SAN traffic after the upgrade.
