OCZ sure knows how to keep everyone’s attention. Why launch all your new products at once when you can spread the press releases out over the course of a week? The latest is the announcement of a 1.8″ version of their Vertex 2 model.
This latest Solid State Drive is a smaller version of the recently announced Vertex 2 Pro. It’s based on MLC memory and driven by a Sandforce controller, delivering up to 50.000 iops in random writes and up to 285MB/s when reading data. The drive is available with capacities of 60, 120 and 240GB, which makes it ideal for notebook users looking for the ultimate in performance.
For most cost-conscious customers there is also a model driven by an older Indilinx controller. The Onyx drive is available in 32 and 64GB sizes, and delivers speeds of up to 145MB/s.
The Onyx drive has a 1.5 million hour MTBF and 2-year warranty; the Vertex is listed as having a 2 million hour MTBF and 3-year warranty. While the Vertex has better performance, it’s also using twice as much power: 2W while in use, as compared to 1W for the Onyx.
