New KeepVault release gets Windows 7 support

It must be Online Backup Week; the press releases from backup suppliers keep coming in. Today’s news comes from KeepVault, which announces their latest software version (3.15) is now fully compatible with Windows 7. It also adds an option to keep a local backup in addition to the online copy of your files.

Imation announces first 1.6 TB LTO-5 tapes

Yesterday, Imation announced that they are the first licensed manufacturer to start producing LTO-5 tapes. LTO-5 is the successor of the current LTO-4 tape standard, doubling raw capacity from 800 to 1600 GB. Transfer speeds are up as well, improving slightly from 120 to 180 MB/second. Today’s deduplication news: IBM, Falconstor/NexSAN

Today brings not one, but two interesting announcements regarding data deduplication. To start with the least exciting: FalconStor is entering into a partnership with NexSAN. FalconStor will provide it’s FDS deduplication software, while the remaining data will be stored on a NexSAN SataBeast.

FarStone bundles DriveClone software with custom hardware

FarStone, known for its DriveClone image-based backup software for both workstations and servers, is now offering a bundle consisting of a storage server and DriveClone Enterprise Server. Using DriveClone, an administrator can centrally manage backups for both servers and workstations. The backups are mountable as a disk image, and can be converted into a VMDK file to convert into a virtual machine or restored using a pre-boot staging environment in the event of a complete server failure.
