When I first read this I thought it was a joke, but after reading their press release it looks like this is the real deal: Nirvanix, one of the leading providers of cloud storage services, is getting into the local storage business. Their hNode product offers companies a local storage node that starts at 200 TB of disk space, and can scale up to multiple petabytes using the same technology that powers the Nirvanix Storage Delivery Network.

Dell just announced some new members for their EqualLogic iSCSI SAN family. The PS6000XVS and PS6010XVS arrays offer both SSD and SAS storage options combined into the same chassis; customers can combine 8 SAS and 8 SSD drives. These new arrays appear to be targeted towards smaller customers; Dell already offered SSD-only models.

IDC’s Worldwide Storage Software Tracker report for the previous quarter was just released, and it shows some mixed data. Year-on-year growth in revenue for storage software was 7.2%, but when compared to last quarter revenue decreased by 1.6%.

Gartner just released their quarterly report on the storage market, and the figures look good. Year-on-year growth for external storage was 18.3 percent, more than making up for last year’s decline.
