SLC Flash memory is a version of Flash Memory in which each cell only holds a single bit of information. This in contrast to MLC or Multi-Layer Cell memory. Because a Single-Layer Cell holds less information producing flash memory or SSDs based on this type of device is more expensive, and SLC-based memory uses a relatively large amount of power.
SLC memory does have two important advantages; first, it’s more durable. A commonly mentioned statistic is that SLC cells can handle about 100.000 write/erase cycles, and MLC only about 10.000; these figures do of course vary in practice, but in general it’s true that SLC is more durable. The other advantage is that writes to SLC-based devices are faster; MLC memory is slower.
