Cisco is expanding into new territory with their NSS 300 series: a new family of small-scale storage servers for small businesses. Models include a 2-, 4- and 6-bay version. These products are aimed at small shops on a tight budget; the smallest unit starts at just $913.

Qnap launches updated 4-drive rackmount NAS

Qnap just announced a new addition to their line of NAS appliances: the TS-410U. This 1U system can house 4 3.5 inch hot-swappable SATA hard drives, delivering up to 8 TB of raw capacity. It also supports 2.5 inch drives.

QNAP blunders with hard disk encryption

According to Baseline Security, QNAP has been shipping their new series of storage applianced supporting full-disk encryption with a hidden backdoor (or decryption feature, depending on your point of view). The devices use the Linux Unified Key Setup software for the encryption; the entire disk is encrypted, and on reboot a decryption key has to be entered before data can be accessed.
