Gartner just released their quarterly report on the storage market, and the figures look good. Year-on-year growth for external storage was 18.3 percent, more than making up for last year’s decline. It’s been known for a couple of years that heating a hard drive platter can help when writing information, but the effect wasn’t fully understood until now. Researchers from Eindhoven University have developed a theory that explains the effect, and allows them to make predictions about the limits in write speed for several materials. Tech-On reports that the Japanese government is sponsoring development of a new type of Solid State Drive.
